MALHEUR FIELD STATION

Location and Setting

The Field Station is surrounded by a unique and diverse setting of desert, wetlands, and mountains. Corresponding to the variety of habitats, visitors have opportunities to witness a spectacular array of birds, plants, stunning geological landscapes and incredible dark night skies.

The MFS is a nonprofit education and research center dedicated to lifelong learning in and about the northern Great Basin region with over 35 years in the Study and Service of Botany, Ornithology, Geology, Entomology, Cultural History, Astronomy, Music, and Visual Arts.

• To reach MFS from the west, take route 78 east (signed to Winnemucca, NV) out of Burns, Oregon.
• Shortly after leaving town look for a right-hand turn onto Highway 205 (signed to Frenchglen and MNWR).
• Travel south on Highway 205 for just over 23 miles, then turn left (east) just before mile marker 24, onto Sodhouse Lane.
• Proceed three miles and turn right (south) onto a gravel road at the MFS sign and mailbox.
• The Malheur Field Station is situated between two buttes about 1.3 miles down this road on the MNWR.
